Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall—A Rotating Staircase with a Unique Steel Structure
The project is located at the Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall in Gaoyou, Jiangsu. Designed by the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University, the building embodies the design concept of “a box containing a pearl,” featuring seven staggered volumes that, when viewed from a distance, resemble seven stacks of open manuscripts. Inside this building steeped in literary atmosphere, two highly sculptural, dark-colored spiral staircases wind upward from either side, serving as the artistic focal points of the space.
The entire staircase is constructed of steel, featuring a triangular-like, irregular curved surface. The two staircases are positioned at different heights, complementing one another. The black handrails contrast with the gray-toned treads, while warm-toned LED strips at the base of the treads resemble flickering flames, adding a touch of warmth to the serene space of the memorial hall.
The charm of the custom-shaped spiral staircase lies in its unique form. From detailed drawing development to factory fabrication and on-site construction, the project posed a significant challenge to the design and construction teams in bringing the steel structure to life. The two staircases spiral upward as a single, seamless unit, serving as a metaphor for Wang Lao’s lifelong journey of perseverance and ascent, and harmonizing perfectly with the memorial hall’s cultural atmosphere.
