Changsha BMW Dealership Showroom—Large-Span, Open-Ceiling Spiral Staircase
Located within the Changsha BMW 4S Store showroom, the interior features a soaring, bright space. A large circular skylight at the top of the showroom allows natural light to pour in. This white, long-span, open-air spiral staircase winds upward along the path of the light, its fluid curves forming a clever echo to the circular shape of the skylight.
The staircase features a white steel structural framework, with the treads clad in
white marble boasting a natural grain. The handrails consist of transparent glass balustrades,
allowing the view to pass through unobstructed. The large-span atrium design allows the staircase to
unfold gracefully within the showroom, while the openwork tread design enables light to filter
through the gaps between the steps, giving the entire structure a bright and airy appearance.
Achieving such a large-span atrium poses significant demands on the strength of the
steel structure, requiring precise structural analysis during the preliminary design phase to ensure
the entire structure is adequately supported. The staircase utilizes high-strength steel for its
framework, and combined with the open-tread design, this effectively reduces the structure’s overall
dead weight. While meeting the necessary load-bearing requirements, this design minimizes the sense
of oppression associated with a large-span staircase, creating a visually more expansive and open
feel.
