La Chapelle Shanghai HQ — Cantilevered Steel Spiral Staircase
In 2018, twenty-four steel spiral staircases were delivered for La Chapelle's Shanghai headquarters — a building designed by NBBJ. The interior runs on a muted grey palette, modern and restrained throughout. This cantilevered spiral staircase sits in the building's central atrium, rising as a vertical landmark within the space.

A grey steel spiral, cantilevered to achieve its vertical form. The steel components are refined in profile — present without being heavy. Marble treads, glass balustrades, metal handrail. The lines run clean and unbroken.

The structure is a cantilevered steel system, formed as a single integrated steel unit that carries the full spiral. The side-mounted glass balustrade keeps the form open; the metal handrail follows the spiral continuously, maintaining the curve without interruption. Grey steel and marble — each material present on its own terms.
The staircase rises alongside the building's full-height curtain wall. Natural light enters through the glass facade and tracks across the spiral surface as the day moves. As the atrium's vertical circulation element, it fits naturally within the building's modern, minimal design language — and within the precision the fashion industry expects of its spaces.
